October 2008

We did not have an outside speaker in October. A discussion did take place about Ed's desire to purchase a new server to replace his Netware 6.5 server. The consensus was to set up the new server with Linux, VM-Ware for servers, MS Server 2008 Small Business, and migrate his existing Netware server into a virtual space.

Ed was also looking to solve a problem at home. His wife has a notebook that needs to connect to the internet through wireless, but she is not allowed to modify this work system that does not have wireless. Ed though he could get a wireless device that would allow an Ethernet output from his wireless network. A search was done on-line and success is eminent (see picture).

September 2008

We did not have an outside speaker in September. An on-line presentation was scheduled but did not happen due to unforeseen circumstances.

Patrick Rouse of Quest Software did a WebEx Presentation.

Patrick's presentation will discuss the new trend of enterprise desktop migration to Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI). (VDI is the practice of hosting a desktop operating system within a virtual machine (VM) running on a centralized server, and accessing those VMs via thin clients). Patrick will describe the architecture of an effective VDI solution, the appropriate hardware to support VDI, and how to configure typical XP Guests for best performance in a VMware environment for security and scalability. He will also give a demo of how the Quest/Provision Network Virtual Access Suite integrates with and extends the functionality of VMware's Virtual Center to help manage VDI. PowerPoint presentaion is available here

Patrick Rouse is a Microsoft MVP for Microsoft Terminal Server, as well as a Sales Engineer, for the Provision Networks Division of Quest Software. He is also an accomplished information systems author, integrator and consultant.
